Jekyll Island Nationally Recognized for Its Uniqueness

Msnbc.com recently selected eleven great American seaside escapes, prized for their natural beauty and old-fashioned character. Jekyll Island made the list of these special oceanside sites – the only state park among the beaches selected.

In looking at the criteria used to pick the best of America’s beach retreats, several questions come to mind: Can it be that seaside vacationers are looking for something other than beaches lined with condos and hotels? Is it possible that Jekyll’s main public beach—that wonderful stretch of sand unobstructed by a built environment—is a visitor draw that cannot be improved upon? Might it be best for Jekyll Island State Park to sport reasonably-priced and newly built oceanfront hotels on existing footprints than to embark on the well-worn development path taken by private beachside resorts?

Enough with your fancy remote beaches. The Maldives? St. Tropez? With the economy what it is, we'll be lucky to get to the next state on a $73 tank of gas. We want close. We want old-fashioned. We want a town where we can park the car, drag a beach chair and a book to the sand, and then shuffle down the boardwalk in our flip-flops for fried clams and an icy-cold can of beer: a place with fireworks, friendly locals, and sticky scoop shops. So we dug up 11 great American seaside escapes, from classic fun-in-the-sun California to New England colonial charm. Because when it comes to precious summer weekends in the sun, there's no place like home.
