On May 18, the JIA announced a series of revisions of the Design Guidelines adopted by the Authority in 2008, most notably a reduction in the limit on building height. The previous building height limit was set at 72 feet; the new limit will be 45 feet, which brings Jekyll in line with the rest of Glynn County, St. Simons Island and Sea Island included.

The revised limit will not apply to buildings already contracted, including the beachfront Jekyll Westin Resort, which will max out at 67 feet, and the recently announced trio of hotels to be built by Trammell Crow, LLC, which will top out at 54 feet.

IPJI, which wrote to the JIA in August of 2013 requesting a review of the building height guidelines, commends the Authority for downsizing the building height limit and thus reducing the impact that future development or redevelopment projects may have on the island’s prized beachfront landscape.
