The twenty water hazards on the Jekyll Island Golf Courses which were engineered during the construction of the courses. Water hazards, like sand traps, are added to golf courses to make them more challenging. If a golfer hits his ball into a water hazard, he incurs a penalty stroke which hurts his score. The ponds and lakes were constructed for this purpose and also to provide fill dirt to contour the fairways and elevate the tees and greens.
